Energy, Environment & Sustainability

  • Overview

The Energy, Environment, and Sustainability (EES) Department is, by all standards, a mould-breaking venture whose raison d’etre is predicated on the growing international, regional and municipal relevance, consciousness and interest in the just energy transition, climate change, environmental protection, conservation & restoration and the notion of ‘sustainability’, which advocates for the utilization of natural resources in a manner that satisfies present needs without necessarily compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own. Empirically, there is a surge and awakening demand for legal expertise in navigating intricate investment negotiations and complying with complex legal, regulatory and institutional frameworks tangential to the just energy transition, climate change, environmental protection, conservation & restoration and sustainability.

  • Services offered

The Department is poised to serve a wide clientele including private corporations and investors, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Inter-Governmental Organizations, Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies among others. The services in question include; consultancy and policy advocacy on international, regional and national legal, regulatory and institutional frameworks, compliance standards and best practices ancillary to Energy, Environment and Sustainability.

In the second place, the Department envisions providing dispute resolution services in the context of disputes arising from renewable energy deployment in Uganda and compliance with regulatory standards on the Environment, such as issues with permits, land rights, environmental regulations and contract disputes. The Department aims to undertake this through mainstream litigation or alternative dispute resolution as dictated by the exigencies of the circumstances. Additionally, the Department envisages the provision of education and capacity building services in the context of the just energy transition, environment and sustainability compliance and best practices in Uganda. The Department intends to undertake the foregoing through organizing workshops, seminars, webinars, ‘X’ Spaces and periodically issuing publications, with the aim of educating stakeholders, including clients, policymakers, and the public, about the legal aspects and emerging trends in the energy transition, environmental protection, conservation and restoration and sustainability compliance and best practices.

Ultimately, the Department is committed to walking the talk through championing the inclusion of energy, environment and sustainability considerations in the firm’s operations.
